About the Discussion

I want you to watch TV with me. There is a new show on CBS this fall that I want you to watch and ponder. It is called “God Friended Me.”

The premise of the show goes like this: Miles is an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from God and unwittingly becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him. Miles believes someone is fooling with him, intentionally pushing his atheist buttons. But then the God account leads him into a series of life-changing situations that make him question his own beliefs. What follows is a show about a man confronted with his life’s choices, and the possibility that there is something beyond himself guiding his life.

Questions of faith, life, God, and relationships are a part of everything we do at United. But these questions are not unique to us alone. People from all walks of life, all ages, all economic and racial backgrounds are asking these questions as well. “God Friended Me” gets to those questions in an entertaining way. One of the lead characters of the show, Cara, says in the first episode that she is learning about the “intersection of faith and science through the prism of social media.” In other words, how can we rely on technology, have personal and virtual relationships, and still be faithful people? Those are the types of questions that I want to discuss with you as we watch this show together.

God Friended Me premieres on Sunday, September 30th at 7:30 p.m. on CBS. If you are a CBS All Access subscriber, you can watch the first episode now. After each episode, I will post discussion questions and related Scripture passages on the United Lutheran website and Facebook page. You are invited to leave comments and ask other questions. I hope that watching this new show together will get us all thinking more about our faith and how we act it out every day in the world around us.
